The Silent Killer

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 13:50.

1 in 3 adults within the U.S. has high blood pressure. This is an alarming statistic when you realize the serious consequences of having these conditions go unchecked. We can find ourselves in a situation leading to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney disease as a result. High blood pressure is also known as the "silent killer" due to the fact most people with this condition would never know they had it if not for a routine check-up by their doctor. By the time you begin to notice the side effects of the condition you may already be at a critical stage.I found the website of the American Heart Association and read some information I've found useful in my battle with high blood pressure.

On their website they offer a tool which will record your blood pressure stats and help monitor your weight. Here are some tips on controlling your blood pressure I thought would benefit us all.

10 Ways to Control Your High Blood Pressure

  1. Know your blood pressure. Have it checked regularly.
  2. Know what your weight should be. Keep it at or below that level.
  3. Don't use too much salt in cooking or at meals. Avoid salty foods.
  4. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole-grain high-fiber foods according to American Heart Association recommendations.
  5. Control alcohol intake. Don't have more than one drink a day if you're a woman or two a day if you're a man.
  6. Take your medicine exactly as prescribed. Don't run out of pills even for a single day.
  7. Keep appointments with the doctor.
  8. Follow your doctor's advice about physical activity.
  9. Make certain your parents, brothers, sisters and children have their blood pressure checked regularly.
  10. Live a normal life in every other way.

Statistics show that 73 million adults 20 years of age and older have high blood pressure.

And a staggering figure of over 40% of African-Americans have high blood pressure.
